Finding Pride In NYC’s Color-Coded Cans

The-Future-of-Trash-is-Here.

I procrastinated ordering the now-required, rat-resistant NYC Sanitation bins because, frankly, I was bothered by having to pay $177.90 when I already had bins. The garbage cans I had, though, didn’t meet the requirement—55 gallons or smaller, with a lid.As of November 12, 2024, New Yorkers with 1–9 residential units are required to place all trash in 55-gallon bins or smaller for pickup. No more trash bags on the sidewalk! Recycling and cardboard remain optional. As of January 2, 2025 — last week — homeowners and building owners can be ticketed for […]

Collecting, Caring and Learning – The B91Community Garden Food Drive A Success!

Rockaway Beach food drive

The unexpected outcome of helping to organize the Food Drive for the Beach 91st St.Community Garden was how much I learned about the food and hygiene needs of people in Rockaway – our community members. When the project started, I called the rectory to confirm that St. Rose of Lima was accepting food pantry donations. Father Rodriguez said, “Absolutely, yes.” I began naively listing items I thought we should collect. I can’t believe I said cat food, soooo embarrassing. The Father politely thanked me but added, “We need on-the-go foods.” I paused, taken aback thinking in my […]

From Bay To Beach To Backyard – The Birds Of 91st Street

Beach 91 Community Garden

“The wild color warblers of spring and fall, the shorebirds of summer, the waders for waterfowl or birds of prey on a winter day? Our year-round residents, or regular or rare visitors? How about birds photographed right here on Beach 91st — from bay to beach to backyard, street tree to jetty — all year long, something to see. Untangling the songs, tuning in: a moving leaf, a new sound, a distinct shape in the sky. A rhythm of arrivals and the departures — certain or shifting — charting time, […]

Growing Connections: Designer Frederico Phillips

Site-Map-Designed-by-Fredrico-Phillips.-I-asked-Fred-if-he-could-illustrate-our-garden-cats-Yes-of-course_-2048x1315

Apart from cultivating delicious foods and discovering the secrets of gardening, an integral appeal of participating in the Beach 91st Street Community Garden is the sense of community it fosters. Over the years, from my initial membership to assuming a leadership role, the garden has provided me with a unique avenue to connect with individuals in Rockaway whom I might never have crossed paths with otherwise. Our group is a sea of cultures and age ranges, yet we find ourselves united by our shared love for the soil. Fred monitoring […]

Bringing A Map To Life

I had the exciting opportunity to collaborate on a design project for The Beach 91st Street Community Garden. For over a year, I’ve been eager to redesign our garden site map but haven’t had the time. I put an email out to my fellow community garden members to see if any creatives were interested in volunteering. Member Walter Meyer responded and introduced me to Diana Erazo, who he taught at Parsons New School and subsequently hired as an intern at his company, Local Office Landscape & Urban Design (LOLA). Some […]

I’m pledging #zerowaste

unloading-the-brown-bins

I was working on a menu design in my home office when I heard a truck pull up outside. Being nosey and easily distracted, I peeked out the window. It was a white truck and behind it was a sanitation car. The back gate of the trailer rolled up and two men started unpackaging dozens of brown bins. Finally, our composting starter kits were here!! I grabbed my phone and ran outside, immediately instagramming a picture, tagging @nycsanitation. I’ve been eager to participate in the NYC Organics Program. The purpose […]

The Block Party!

partygoers

Previously Published in The Wave. I believe I was 8 years old. We were at my Aunt Katherine’s annual block party on Herbert St. in Greenpoint. I was running for dear life down the middle of the block screaming because my cousin Tommy was chasing me. He had a bucket of ice in tow. Tommy was 5 years older than me, so naturally, he caught up quick, even with the ice bucket. He grabbed me tight around the waist and threw the ice down the back of my shirt. Ice […]

Grams of the Week – July 3

Here’s a recap of the best instagrams of last week. If you want the day to day follow me here! The garden is in full bloom. Above is pomegranate yarrow. This rich color works so well with the purples (russian sage, cat mint) and yellows (day lilies) already in my garden. yarrow is very easy to care for. if you deadhead the old flowers more will grow throughout the summer. The rain didn’t hamper the Beach 91st street block party. Wow, it was a crazy party. Above is Matt and Grill Master good […]

Tree Rant

Last November I wrote about the tree the city finally planted in my sidewalk tree pit. It wasn’t doing well despite my daily watering and compost. I hadn’t given up on it, I was planning on trimming the tree next spring and giving it another year but the city came and pulled it out this week! I don’t get the tree planting system – the money it must cost the city in contracts! The tree didn’t look good when we got it, is there any oversight? Now I’m left with this! Anyway, the contractor […]
