Episode 9: Jumbo-laya

jumbo-laya

The weather has turned and to be honest, I prefer it. I like to cook and make big meals, which is not what you want to do in the sweltering heat of the summer. Today we are breaking out a hearty recipe from my brother James’ kitchen in Ridgewood, the Jumbo-laya. He is a renowned soup maker with his Jumno-laya as his crown jewel (I made that up, but it makes you want to watch the episode, no?). This is a very large serving, so invite a bunch of people […]

Seasonal Plantings New to Myrtle Ave – Ridgewood

I received the Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District monthly email and was happy to read about this: New seasonal plantings have been added as part of a new program initiative begun in September by the Myrtle Avenue BID, the Ridgewood LDC & The Horticultural Society of New York.  The plantings have given the pedestrian plazas at the intersection of 71 Av., Stephen Street and Myrtle Av. as well as Venditti Square & a planting area at Catalpa & Myrtle Avenues a holiday makeover. Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District, with the Ridgewood Local Development Corporation, the city’s partner in caring for this space, […]

Meet… Pickle

Pickle the Cat

Welp, I’ve done it again. From the same location I found Fiver, I met Pickle. I’m almost positive that Fiver and Pickle are related – that’s why I had to take her in. I met Pickle three days before we were moving to Rockaway, so things are more complicated this go around. Until we’re settled in, Uncle Al is watching Pickle at the studio in Ridgewood. He’s doing a great job socializing Pickle. In a month or so, we’ll start the Fiver/Pickle introduction process. I know in my heart that Fiver and […]

Garden Update: #11 – Paper Wasps

paper wasp nest

This week I had planned to post a final RD recap but then I found this… Nature is so fascinating, I spent almost an hour observing these paper wasps last night. Paper wasps are 0.7 to 1.0 inch (1.8 to 2.5 cm)-long wasps that gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva, and use to construct water-resistant nests made of gray or brown papery material. Paper wasps are also sometimes called umbrella wasps, due to the distinctive design of their nests The nests of most […]

Garden Update #10 Winter Snow

Fiver

Everything is covered in snow! Including Our Lady of Ridgewood.   Fiver ran out the door not realizing there was snow outside. He ventured further than his last snow excursion. After about 5 minutes, Fiver opted to sit in the doorway waiting for me to finish with these photos.
