From Bay To Beach To Backyard – The Birds Of 91st Street

Beach 91 Community Garden

“The wild color warblers of spring and fall, the shorebirds of summer, the waders for waterfowl or birds of prey on a winter day? Our year-round residents, or regular or rare visitors? How about birds photographed right here on Beach 91st — from bay to beach to backyard, street tree to jetty — all year long, something to see. Untangling the songs, tuning in: a moving leaf, a new sound, a distinct shape in the sky. A rhythm of arrivals and the departures — certain or shifting — charting time, […]

The Bird Event Of Beach 91st Street

It was the day after the “apocalypse.” The dangerous air quality conditions from the Canadian wildfires cleared. It was safe to breathe the air again. Chirpy

Disclaimer: One week I’m writing about coconut oil and the next this. I hope you guys don’t think I’ve totally lost of my mind… It was an hour before my parents were arriving to go out to Bungalow Bar for a Father’s Day brunch when a friend of mine texts saying “There’s a hatchling bird on the cement in front of Key Food. It can’t even lift its head.” My stomach got sick. I took a few minutes, “Am I willing to go through this?” I don’t know how I […]

Previously published in The Wave. We’ve had a handful of exotic visitors this year in Rockaway. Over the winter, the Snowy Owl spent a couple of months relaxing in Breezy Point. Several seals hit the beach recently, beating the summer crowds no doubt. In April, two dolphins joined a group of surfers at the line-up for a swim. Rockaway attracts the extraordinary and seemingly is a landing pad for the kooky and creative – humans and animals alike. So when my friend Matt Johnson posted a picture of a peacock […]

Bagel Bird Feeder

bagel bird feeder

Walking home from Valentino’s this past Sunday I spotted this! A bagel just sitting in a tree, I thought “how bizzare, must be some kids goofing around.” I continued walking home and then WABAM!! – I had a great idea. I should make a bagel bird feeder! Even though the weather has been cold and snowy, I’ve noticed the birds have started their migration. This is a beautiful time of year to bird watch, you’ll see uncommon species on their travels and I’m guessing they’ll be hungry. Below are my directions for the bagel […]
