The Happiest People In the World Winter Swim, So We Should Too

IMG_4242

I took a dip in the ocean last Sunday. As one would guess, it was quite cold. The temperature read 41 degrees. It was windy. I loved it. Artist Riitta Ikonen is the organizer of Sea Changes, the Rockaway winter swim initiative I participated in. Sea Changes is part of a global program curated by FLOCK to connect friends, family, community and strangers during our global pause. It is offered with support from the arts and cultural organization, Nordic Culture Fund and Nordic Culture Point, a cultural arts grant program. The FLOCK website reads: “Ikonen […]

Paula’s Pea Soup With Crispy Fried Onions

The begin of split pea soup

Everyone is talking turkey but I’m talking soup. I’ve been cooking a different soup each Sunday – escarole soup, vegetable soup, french onion soup, lentil soup – Italian style and an Indian curry version. This past week I made split pea soup for the first time. I’m not a big pea person but I wanted to give it a try anyway, to experiment. Because storage of dried peas is easy and low-cost, many cultures have pea-based soup recipes. The traditional split pea variety originates in the 19th century. Sailors would […]

Grams of the Week – Jan 30

beach 91st street Rockaway

Oh I’ve been slacking on this… sry! Here’s a recap of the best instagrams of last week. If you want the day to day follow me here! I picked up a new client (yah!!). But I’ve been going into the city for meetings – it’s a lot of  back and forth. At least I can kill some time by taking sad rainy instagram pictures… A few days ago it felt almost like spring. I went outside and took these winter garden photos (above). Ahhhh but only a few days later the snow […]

Run Those Pipes!

Opening-the-sheerock-above-the-bed,-eek!

Previously published in The Wave. Happy Birthday Matt!! On my husband’s birthday, which also happens to be New Years Day, we get a text from our tenants, “So strange, our water isn’t working.” “What?!!? Turn on all the faucets – hot and cold!” I went into red alert mode, grabbed a blow dryer and extension cord and ran upstairs. I tried to find access to the pipes but there were no major lines exposed. My husband spent the next hour or so trying to figure out where their pipes were in […]

Here’s a recap of the best instagrams of last week. If you want the day to day follow me here! The Bomb Cyclone is the theme of this weeks grams of the week. Here’s Cookie using her new Cat Cave Bed which I got her for Christmas. It’s made from sheep’s wool, so warm! My friends Dave and Anna made some good old comfort food the day after the storm, thx u! There’s nothing like homemade pizza (drooooolllll). My parents took me to Bungalow Bar  for a pre–birthday lunch (thats right!!!!!). Before I walked in, I spotted this frozen bike and had […]

An Old Ford and Two Christmas Miracles

Christmas Tree all decorated

I dropped a barrage of obscenities hanging up my outside Christmas lights. Every year I have fuses blow, bulbs that break and bows that blow off my porch, never to be seen again. How come my decorating experience isn’t like the ones I see on the Hallmark Christmas movies that I love and binge-watch? Getting frustrated and cursing at inanimate objects is not what Christmas is about. I took a few minutes (and a glass of wine) to calm myself before I finished the last string of lights. Since then, […]

Snow Day!

Why is it so much fun when it snows? I didn’t even mind shoveling the front of the house. Most people can work from home so that’s a good thing. It justifies day drinking (definitely a good thing) and it just feels like a special day. Everything slows down, it’s a break from the day to day frenzy. After shoveling so my housemates*  don’t slip and fall and sue me,  I walked around and took  some photos. My block facing the bay. I took this one by  Borders and the blvd. The police […]

laziness procures brilliance – the year-round koozie

koozie

I was recently gifted a Dolly Parton koozie (be jealous Katie Honan). I thought, “I can’t wait to sport this, basking on the beach this summer. What a cool gift!” Then, a few days ago, I was sitting in my usual evening spot – on the couch, by the space heater with my blanket (yes, we have heat but it’s still cold). I was relaxing, watching some Gilmore Girls and drinking a beer – ok fine, I admit… it was a twisted tea. I generally don’t like drinking cold beverages in the […]

Last Stop, Broad Channel

Broad Channel - Queens

You know the final scene in Titanic when Leonardo DiCaprio is in the arctic waters freezing to his death trying to console his beloved (also frozen) Rose (Kate Winslet)? Every day that clip flashes through my mind as my stomach fills with dread… then we arrive. LAST STOP BRAWD CHANNEL, Transfah to the A!!!! It’s essential that we Rockaway commuters have our winter gear situation down pat.  There’s the hoodie/hat combo, the double coat plus cap technique, the earmuff collar up style, the poofy coat /headphone combo etc. etc. I’m partial to the hat/scarf head wrap. My nose is like the peninsula, […]
