Palms and Tamales

Palm Sunday Ridgewood Queens

I like to “church-hop”. There are so many beautiful churches in Ridgewood  (St. Brigid,  St Matthias, St Aloysius) that I can’t help but visit them all. But on Palm Sunday I always go to St. Brigid’s, because after mass, the street is packed with parishioners buying and selling palms, chatting with Monsignor Kelly and eating food from the carts that set up on Linden and St. Nicholas.

I asked this Palm maker how long it takes to create her arrangements. She said for the larger ones, about 20 minutes.

All the palm arrangements are $5.00.  I’m not sure how this happens but all the vendors agree on the same price – to limit competition i’m guessing.

I couldn’t help but get a tamale! It was hot and sweet! Underneath the tray pictured here, is another tin filled with hot charcoals – so smart really. Other snacks included ice cream, tacos and churros.

The hoop-la will be happening all day until  evening mass (or the palms run out) so pass by, grab some tamales and stop in St. Brigids.
