First Communion Banners

I was taken back by the artwork for the children’s first Communion banners I saw this past Sunday at St. Rose of Lima. Each one is a special expression of creativity and love for God. I drifted during mass, critiquing and trying to picture what each child looked like that created each illustration. The banners are hung along the walls, they look so beautiful!

I commend Tyel for his unconventional color scheme, way to go!  The application of a yellow band on Jaidyn’s makes his name stand out from the crowd!

Jayden’s use of shiny beads and plastic grapes transforms her piece from a one dimensional banner to a relief. She is a risk-taker and has true artist vision. Justin’s typographic treatment and bold composition is geometrically balanced – I see a graphic designer in the making!

Immediately your eye is drawn to Elijah’s banner. The simplicity and center alignment of this art is understated. The focus is unquestionably the Holy Eucharist. His choice to make the host purple is surprising and mysterious, it is a metaphor for the mystery of Christ. This piece is brilliant.

Melissa’s Bauhaus work is structural and futuristic in design. Her choice to extend the wheat out from the hostia was intentional and meaningful – the wheat represents us, and Jesus is the Eucharist .”Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” She must be studying the Corinthians!

Vicente’s chose to exclude the chalice and focus on the cross makes his piece divergent and unique. The angled cross and ornate grape vine shows his attention to detail. I looked at Lamae’s banner and thought, Kandinsky’s sketches right away.  His  “rough cut” line technique is a distinctive feature of his art.

Angie created a “Mayweather” bling chalice! Jorge’s Picasso-inspired design is abstract and organic – nice use of  negative space. The Untitled depicts a well executed Chi Rho, each element is anchored by the bold green background square, nice composition!

The wealth of creatively children have is truly special. Applause to all of these young artists and congratulations to them for receiving their First Holy Communion.
